Khakshir was born in a time when there were not many doctors and certainly no over the counter medicines and the grandmother’s remedy was the accepted way to cure diseases. But both generations later and in Israel, I continue to make this drink. In our family, it is customary to prepare khakshir with cold water and ice to treat diarrhea and hot water to treat constipation. It is important to wash the seeds well (I move them several times from bowl to bowl) to remove all the sand from them. You can get the seeds in health food stores or spice stores.
Ingredients for Khakshir
- 4 tablespoons Khakshir seeds (also known as Flixweed seed)
- 1 cup water cold
- a few drops rosewater
- 2 tablespoons Sugar
- ice cubes
1. Put khakshir seeds in a bowl and fill with water, rinse and change the water three or four times until the water is completely clear.
2. Filter the seeds, transfer to a glass and add rose water, sugar and ice. Works miracles and wonders.
