Season 1 Episode 1 - Barbara Kirshenblatt Gimblett

When it was going to be a meat dish in this home economics class, in this public school, us Jewish kids used to bring kosher meat from home".

Our guest for this episode of “What is your FOODISH?” is Professor Emerita of Performance Studies at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and is known for her interdisciplinary contributions to Jewish studies, Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett. Barbara grew up in Toronto, Canada, surrounded by her two sisters and parents in a home where cooking was something that was required and even so, “she had a full repertoire of all kinds of dishes from her childhood”.

Merav Oren, FOODISH CEO, speaks with Barbara about their shared love of Home Economics classes and Barbara’s takeaways from her time living in Israel, her extensive cookbook collection, who she’d love to have dinner with and why she finds cooking for people with food restrictions to be a joy.
